FAQs
Some questions you may have about the journey & how it works:
We don’t think of our lives as ‘brand models’. We think of our lives as stories with beginnings-middles-ends and chapters of change. Career narrative authoring is easier to integrate in our daily lives as it helps us see the story we have lived, with new meaning, enabling meaningful career choices & communication. Since it’s easier to integrate into our self-concept, the learnings don’t remain in a ‘model’, they can be brought into how we show up at work. Almost immediately.
We use stories. ‘Stories’ are to ‘Narratives’ what ‘jigsaw pieces’ are to ‘the picture on the box’: They're what the pieces point to - that's what counts. Many stories help you build a single narrative. Participants do tell stories in the process, but the goal isn’t to tell a better story. The goal is to help build a unified narrative of the careers they are living.
No. This is sense-making and skill building. Participants often get inspired by the new possibilities they see in their own stories. That’s not the goal itself, rather a favourable secondary consequence. Studies show, narrative approaches promote agency & self-direction.
Yes. The following workshops are best suited as stand-alone sessions: Strength Authoring, Value-Drivers Authoring, Future Vision Authoring. Networking. The remaining are best delivered as part of the the full journey. Custom workshops available on request. Request full curriculum for more.
Yes. As someone obsessed with narratives, to me it’s crucial that your students see an integration between your team’s narrative and mine. The more coherent the narrative, the better for them. We’ll work this in during design and deployment of the session.
Yes. Gallups Strength Finder and Career Leader integrate best with Narrative Authoring. If you have a proprietary psychometric testing model internally I’d be happy to hear how it works and ensure we can deliver an integrated career development process for your students.
No. Participants are guided through a process of meaning making, so they can see their stories in a new way and take decisions & communicate better as a result. Some theory is covered to help the process. The Networking & Interview Story workshops are more theoretical, but still include write exercises.
Participants go through three steps to craft their narratives. Academics call it: De-Construction. Co-Construction. Re-Constructions. Write and unpack stories to find new meaning. Define what you found. Use what you found to drive choices and communication. I call it Discover, Define, Deploy. You'll enjoy the white paper. Or a conversation. Get in touch!
Each workshop is 4hrs long. The Networking workshop is 2 hrs long. See the full curriculum for agenda overviews. “The hours flew by” - Participant Feedback
Depends. How quickly do you want to do it? What are you optimising for? 6-7 weeks is ideal, one session a week. It enables deeper integration of the learnings. We can also do it more bootcamp styled. As ‘bootcamp’ suggests, it’s harder, faster, but it works. We can customise it to your needs.
Writing based exercises. Guided peer coaching styled conversations where participants share stories with each other to find new meaning. Theoretical frameworks for communication & decision making. Playbooks for relationship building, effective meetings & interviews.
No. They only need to bring themselves, as the knowledge of their careers and stories are internal.
Yes. These sessions have been delivered in world leading business schools, whose classrooms are filled with diverse profiles of cultural backgrounds, genders, academic & professional choices and personal interests. We use stories, and story-based-maps which look the same in all cultures and professional environments.
Thank you for your interest. Generally, no. It's not my business model, I deliver this as a visiting prof. I’m happy to make exceptions for mid to late career professionals looking to make significant changes or in a crisis of career meaning. We will follow the approach I bring to world leading MBAs and we will go deeper as you’re making a commitment that few make. Setup a discovery call.
At the moment, The Story of Your Career and the workshops therein, are only available through in-person delivery. Speak to your careers team or your talent team if you want to see this where you are. I’m considering building an online learning program for individual career changers, drop me a line if you are interested.
